Barcelona stars Marc-André ter Stegen and Arthur are set to undergo treatment for their respective injuries, after the club announced that both players will be out for the next few weeks.
Arthur will miss around three weeks in order to receive treatment for an ongoing groin problem which was initially picked up at the start of the month.
According to the club’s official website, their first-choice keeper is also receiving treatment due to a tendon problem in his right knee.
The 27-year-old’s return was not confirmed by the club, which will be of concern for La Blaugrana faithful.
The news will come as a huge blow to Barcelona, as Ter Stegen in particular has been one of Barcelona’s best players this season. Neto will likely replace Ter Stegen in goal for their upcoming fixture against Espanyol.
Barcelona announced the signing of the 30-year-old from Valencia back in June, but the keeper is yet to make a league appearance for Barcelona, having played just one game in the Champions League against Inter.
Ernesto Valverde’s squad returned to training on Sunday, after a well-earned break during the festive period in preparations for their derby in the early stages on the new year. Barcelona will be coming face to face with an old friend as Espanyol’s new manager, ex-Barcelona player Abelardo, will take charge.
Barcelona currently sit at the top of La Liga, two points above arch rivals Real Madrid, as they enter the new year in good form.
Their upcoming fixture against Espanyol is expected to be comfortable one for Valverde’s side, as Espanyol have been fairly dreadful this season. Barcelona will then face Atletico Madrid just five days later at Camp Nou when they take on Los Rojiblancos in the semi-final of the Super Cup.
