Chelsea have made an offer to sign wantaway Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani on-loan until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old has been a marginal figure at Parc de Princes this season, struggling to force his way back into the team after suffering a hip injury at the end of August.

Cavani handed in a transfer request earlier in the week with PSG sporting director Leonardo confirming that he is free to leave the club in January. A litany of top European sides have been linked with the striker during the winter transfer window including: Manchester UnitedInter and Tottenham.

Chelsea has also been touted as a possible destination and the Blues have stepped up their interest in the player by offering to take Cavani on-loan until the end of the season. The Times are reporting that the Blues’ proposed deal includes covering the forward’s wages, which are thought to be more than £360,000 per-week, as well as paying a loan fee of around £5m.

Atletico Madrid remain in pole position to secure Cavani’s signature, despite Chelsea’s attempts to hijack the move and it is understood that the former Napoli frontman has agreed personal terms for an 18-month deal with Atleti. Cavani stands to earn €10m (£8.5m) a year, but the deal is being held up by the two clubs’ failure to agree on a transfer fee.

The Parisians are believed to want as much as £23m for the player with the highest bid being tabled so far only reaching the £8.5m mark.

Chelsea’s approach for Cavani coincides with Frank Lampard revealing his desire to sign a new striker, after his side succumbed to a disappointing 2-2 draw with 10-man Arsenal on Tuesday.

“You can’t say we will definitely sign a striker but we are looking. If you don’t score enough goals you won’t win enough games,” was Lampard’s reflection, via BBC Sport, after facing the Gunners.
