Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud confirms he will have to make decision over future in January

Giroud out in the cold

Olivier Giroud left Arsenal for Chelsea in January of 2018.

The Frenchman has gone on to enjoy a decent stint at Chelsea, though his game time, especially in 2020, has been reduced dramatically.

The first half of 2019/20 saw then Frenchman barely get a sniff in Chelsea’s Premier League ties.

This led to speculation in January that the veteran forward could be on the move, with both Tottenham and Inter Milan linked.

However, no move would materialize and, in part due to some injury issues/declining form of Tammy Abraham, Giroud was then handed a fair few starts in the second half of the campaign.

But since 2020/21 began, Giroud has once again seen his game time slashed.

The arrivals of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech means the Frenchman has slipped even further down Frank Lampard’s attacking pecking order, with Giroud notching a dismal 36 minutes of league action this season.

Giroud to assess future

And with the Euros just around the corner, you would imagine Giroud would have to start playing more in order to secure a regular place for France.

Didier Deschamps has even recently urged his forward to ‘find another solution’ when it comes to his playing time.

Now, in a recent interview with Telefoot, Giroud has himself spoken out over his lack of minutes.

And the 34-year-old went on to state that he will need to make a decision about his current situation in January:

“It’s worrying. I thought I still had a role to play at Chelsea but my playing time is getting reduced a lot. It’s going to have to change or a decision must be made.

“I am clear-headed about my situation: I will have to make a decision in January. I hope to make the right one, as I have always done.”
