Dortmund Hit Köln for 5 as Erling Haaland Bags a Brace on His Home Debut

2 min read

Erling Haaland crowned his Dortmund home debut with a brace as Die Borussen ended FC Köln’s four-match unbeaten run with a thumping 5-1 victory on Friday night.

The 19-year-old followed up his hat-trick against Augsburg with two goals here, adding to strikes from Raphael Guerreiro, Marco Reus and Jadon Sancho in an emphatic Dortmund win.

The infamous yellow wall was rocking within a minute, as Sancho raced down the wing to find Guerreiro, who coolly slotted home.

Lucien Favre’s men almost had a penalty soon after, but after consulting VAR, referee Harms Osmer decided the foul on Achraf Hakimi was committed just outside the area.

Moments later, Mats Hummels was inches from Dortmund‘s second when his header hit the bar but on the half-hour mark, the defender did contribute to his side doubling their lead.

Hummels’ raking through ball found Reus, who raced through the middle to poke between Köln keeper Timo Horn’s legs and after a VAR review for offside, the goal was confirmed.

After surviving an early second-half Köln scare, Die Borussen quickly had their third as Sancho smashed home at the near post.

The visitors grabbed a goal back courtesy of a brilliantly taken volley from Mark Uth, but it proved to be a consolation as Haaland’s introduction off the bench changed the game.

The recent signing from Red Bull Salzburg wasted no time in endearing himself to the home faithful, prodding home the rebound after Guerreiro’s initial attempt had been saved.

And the Norwegian marksmen wasn’t finished there; Haaland broke Köln’s high line, rounded the keeper before scoring from the narrowest of angles to sign the night off in style.

The win is the second time in consecutive games that Dortmund have scored five and they have closed the gap to Bundesliga leaders RB Leipzig to just four points.

Favre’s side will again hope to score maximum points when they invite Union Berlin to Signal Iduna Park in the league next Saturday.
