LIVE: Burnley vs Manchester United

6 min read

45′ + 3′ Bardsley switches play out to McNeil with a wonderful cross and he puts the ball into the box with his first touch. The United defenders can’t get near it, but none of the Burnley players have made a run to the far post to get on the end of it.

45′ + 1′ United are looking to their right side to make something happen whenever they go forward. James tries to play a one-two with Pereira to get into more space, but Taylor intercepts the return pass and gets it clear.

44′ Taylor takes too long to clear his lines and a heavy touch gifts the ball to Pereira on the right. He curls his pass in front of the left-back to pick out Martial in the box.

44′ MARTIAL SCORES! It’s a great pass into Pereira from James and neither of the Burnley central defenders pick up the Frenchman’s run into the box. He has time to take a touch and lift his effort over Pope and into the back of the net. 1-0 United!

42′ Tarkowski plays a long ball over the top as soon as he receives the throw-in and he picks out Barnes on the right of the box. Williams is closing him down, but he still manages to get a shot away. He slices it though and it curls wide of the near post.

40′ Pope is back on his feet and he’s going to try and carry on after getting his treatment. Hart is still warming up for Burnley just in case though.

38′ Pope has gone down on his line and he’s getting some treatment for what looks like an ankle injury after he landed awkwardly on it when he tried to change direction to follow United’s cross. Hart is getting ready to come on, so it doesn’t look like Pope will be able to carry on.

36′ Burnley have had just one shot on target in their last 3.5 hours of Premier League football, and are yet to have an attempt in this game.

34′ OFF THE LINE! James tries to square a cross into the six-yard box but a deflection off Tarkowski gives it straight to Martial instead. He takes a touch before hitting his shot towards goal and Bardsley gets back to block his shot on the line.

33′ Burnley have all of their players sitting deep in their own half at the moment as they try to close down the space ahead of United and stop them from getting into the final third.

31′ Pereira is given a lot of space on the right and he tries to square it into Rashford in the middle of the box. It’s cut out by Mee though and Burnley have the chance to clear their lines.

29′ Rashford takes the free-kick, but it’s a long way out. It looks like he’s trying to curl it into the top corner, but a big deflection off the wall takes it high over the crossbar and into the stands.

27′ The Burnley fans are starting to get frustrated with the referee now as he points for another free-kick for United, but it did look like Mee caught Rashford with a trailing arm.

25′ It’s slow build-up from United now as their defenders keep hold of it on the halfway line due to Burnley closing down the space in midfield. Maguire tries to play a throughball to Pereira, but it’s cut out by Cork.

Yellow Card

23′ Bardsley picks up the first yellow card of the game after he catches Williams with a late challenge.

21′ It’s a deep corner swung into the box from McNeil and he’s looking for Tarkowski at the far post. He’s leaning back to make contact with it and he can’t direct his header back towards the target.

19′ OFF THE POST! Cork almost gets on the end of Wood’s nod down in the box but misses the ball and De Gea sets United off on the counter-attack. Pereira cuts the ball back to Rashford on the edge of the area and he curls his effort around Mee and off the outside of the right post.

17′ The free-kick is just outside the box on the left and it’s a tight angle for a shot, but Fred does go for goal. He gets his effort over the wall, but there’s not dip on the shot as it sails over the crossbar.

15′ Lindelof plays a good pass into James on the right and he gets the better of Taylor as he makes a run towards the box. The left-back tries to win the ball but ends up taking down James and United have another free-kick.

13′ GOOD SAVE! It’s Rashford that’s standing over the free-kick just outside the box and it goes through the wall and is swerving towards the bottom right corner. Pope gets down well and pushes it away with both hands.

12′ It’s a driving run through midfield from Rashford as he gets away from three Burnley players to get to the edge of the box. He pulls it back to Fred who has more space and he wins a free-kick after Tarkowski catches him late.

10′ United are keeping the ball well at the moment, but they’re struggling to get into the final third. Maguire tries to pick out Martial with a long ball over the top, but he overhits it and it rolls out of play for a throw-in.

8′ Taylor does brilliantly to get away from Fred and Young down the left wing and curls a good cross into the middle of the box. He’s looking for Barnes at the far post, but Williams just does enough to take it away from him.

6′ Young lands heavily on his back after him and Barnes both get up to try and head the ball. The medical team are with him now, but it looks like he’s going to able to carry on.

4′ Williams plays a good throughball into the box and Pereira is the one chasing it down. Pope is quickly off his line and closing him down and makes the angle impossibly tight for him to squeeze a cross into the middle.

2′ Maguire knocks Barnes down near the halfway line and Tarkowski puts a good ball into the box. It’s nodded down by Wood on the edge of the box to try and pick out Barnes on the other side, but Williams gets across to clear it.

1′ Pereira gets the game underway for United!

The teams are out on the pitch now, with kick-off just moments away.

Burnley haven’t lost their last game in a calendar year since 2012 (1-0 v Leicester City in the Championship), winning three and drawing three since. Meanwhile, United haven’t lost their last game of the year since 2011 (3-2 v Blackburn Rovers), winning four and drawing three since then.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes four changes to his team after their win over Newcastle United last time out, with Young, Williams, Matic and James all starting. Shaw, Wan-Bissaka and Greenwood start on the bench, while Scott McTominay misses out through injury. There is also no place for Paul Pogba in the squad as Solskjaer is resting him after his return from injury.

Sean Dyche makes just two changes to the side that lost to Everton on Thursday as he brings both Hendrick and Barnes into the starting line-up. Brady and Rodriguez drop down to the bench.

MANCHESTER UNITED SUBS: Sergio Romero, Mason Greenwood, Phil Jones, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

MANCHESTER UNITED STARTING XI (4-2-3-1): David de Gea; Ashley Young, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Brandon Williams; Fred, Nemanja Matic; Daniel James, Andreas Pereira, Marcus Rashford; Anthony Martial.

BURNLEY STARTING XI (4-4-2): Nick Pope; Phil Bardsley, James Tarkowski, Ben Mee, Charlie Taylor; Jeff Hendrick, Ashley Westwood, Jack Cork, Dwight McNeil; Chris Wood, Ashley Barnes.

United are looking to try and close the gap to the top four with a win in their final game of 2019 and have lost just one of their last eight matches in all competitions (W5 D2), though that defeat did come in their last away game against Watford (2-0). Burnley, on the other hand, have lost three of their last five matches (W2), including their last outing against Everton when they lost 1-0.
