LIVE: Wolves vs Manchester United

5 min read

48′ Wolves have started brightly, with Doherty getting in down the right and Neves seeing a shot charged down on the edge of the box. Much more positive from the hosts.

46′ We’re back under way for the second half!

46′ Ashley-Seal’s full debut comes to an end as he is replaced up front by Jimenez before the restart.

Romero’s save came from the only shot on target of the game as neither side have been able to really test each other. Both teams have been very cautious in the first half and both the number and quality of chances created has suffered as a result.

There goes the half-time whistle! Romero’s stunning one-handed save from Dohery’s close-range volley is the highlight of a cagey first half in which neither side was able to create much of note. United feel aggrieved to not have been awarded a penalty after Williams was felled in the box, but it remains goalless at the break.

45′ Williams inadvertently plays a pass off James and out for a throw-in. The pair’s link-up down the left has not quite clicked yet.

43′ Williams backheels into the path of James, who uses his searing pace to edge ahead of Doherty. However, the wing-back eases him off the ball and James goes to ground, but is not awarded a free-kick.

41′ Wolves are getting caught playing out from the back at times, allowing United to pile some pressure on as they take advantage of the turnovers high up the pitch.

39′ OVER! Lindelof meets a Mata corner at the near post but can only flick his header up into the air and it loops over the bar and lands on the roof of the net.

37′ WIDE! Lindelof steps up from the back and finds Mata on the edge of the box. He works a yard cleverly and feeds James, but the winger drags his effort well wide, snatching at the shot somewhat.

35′ OVER! A corner is worked to Neves on the edge of the box and he strikes an effort towards the top-right corner, but his fierce drive is just over the bar.

34′ Williams finds himself high up the field once again as he chases a long ball in behind in a central position, but Romero is out to the edge of his box to claim.

32′ Maguire seems to have hurt himself while stretching to challenge Traore and is not moving freely. Jones is warming up on the sidelines just in case.

30′ NO PENALTY! Dendoncker gets himself in a muddle as the ball runs through to him, allowing Williams to nip in and appearing to bring the full-back down in the box! However, the referee gives nothing and VAR confirms his decision! Wolves have got away with one there.

28′ United’s policy of shooting on sight in the last few minutes is not paying dividends, as James becomes the latest player to fire over the top from outside the box.

26′ Pereira then has a go of his own from distance, but he leans back and blazes his effort well over the bar.

24′ Greenwood lets one fly from some distance, but it’s blocked comfortably away. That was unlikely to test Ruddy even if it had found its way through.

23′ The tempo has been a bit flat to this point. Both teams seem to be exercising a great deal of caution.

21′ Plenty of sloppy passes on display from both teams so far as they gift possession to each other. Nobody has managed to capitalise on this yet, however.

19′ A clever touch from Greenwood on the edge of the box nearly releases Chong into the box, but the latter is crowded out on the ball and the danger is diffused as the youngster commits a cheap foul on Coady.

17′ Neither side has yet stamped their authority on proceedings, with plenty of turnovers of possession in midfield.

15′ Saiss goes on a driving run upfield as the United defence back off and wins a foul off Matic in a dangerous position on the edge of the box. However, Vinagre’s free-kick is poor and goes straight into the wall.

13′ SAVE! WHAT A SAVE! The second corner finds its way to the back post, where Doherty is completely free to volley at goal. Romero, who had already committed himself, somehow makes a stunning one-handed save to deny him!

12′ The corner comes into the middle and comes off the back of Williams, but it spins just wide of the far post and behind for a second set-piece!

11′ A scrappy passage of play follows in which neither side are able to retain the ball in midfield, but it eventually breaks for Wolves and Neto charges forward before feeding Traore out wide, who wins a corner.

9′ It’s been fairly even in the early stages of this one, with both sides probing but failing to carve out a clear chance for themselves just yet.

7′ Ashley-Seal drives forward but is dispossessed well on the edge of the United box. The visitors counter and Greenwood tries to work a yard for himself in the box, but ends up shooting well wide.

5′ Neto fouls Pereira in a dangerous position out wide, but the resulting free-kick is woeful and straight into the one-man wall.

3′ Ashley-Seal chases a long ball forward into space behind the defence, but Romero comes charging all the way out of his box to head clear!

1′ We’re under way at Molineux!

26 of the 27 teams to eliminate United from the FA Cup (including winning finals) have been in the top-flight that season – the exception was Leeds United in 2009-10, who were in League One.

Wolves can come into their 10th FA Cup meeting with United with confidence, having gone unbeaten in their last four matches against the Red Devils under Nuno (W2 D2).

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, however, retains just four of the 11 players that started United’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in their last game. Lindelof, Maguire, Matic and James keep their spots, with seven changes made. Scott McTominay, Paul Pogba, Axel Tuanzebe, Marcos Rojo, Eric Bailly, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard make up a lengthy injury list for the Red Devils.

Wolves head coach Nuno Espirito Santo makes five changes from the side that were beaten 2-1 by Watford last time out. Ruddy, Kilman, Neves, Vinagre and Ashley-Seal – making his full debut – come into the side, with Patricio, Bennett, Moutinho, Jonny and Jimenez dropping to the bench. Morgan Gibbs-White, Willy Boly and Diogo Jota are all out through injury.

Manchester United substitutes: Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot, Angel Gomes, Fred, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Lee Grant, Phil Jones.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): Sergio Romero; Ashley Young, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Brandon Williams; Andreas Pereira, Nemanja Matic; Tahith Chong, Juan Mata, Daniel James; Mason Greenwood.

Wolves substitutes: Raul Jimenez, Jonny, Oskar Buur, Ryan Bennett, Owen Otasowie, Rui Patrício, Joao Moutinho.

Wolves XI (3-4-3): John Ruddy; Leander Dendoncker, Conor Coady, Max Kilman; Matt Doherty, Romain Saiss, Ruben Neves, Ruben Vinagre; Adama Traore, Benny Ashley-Seal, Pedro Neto.

Manchester United will be hoping to avoid being knocked out of the FA Cup by Wolves for two seasons in a row tonight, having been dumped out at the quarter-final stage last year.
