Real Madrid Closing in on €35m Deal for Flamengo’s Brazilian Starlet Reinier

Real Madrid are setting their sights on another Brazilian teenage sensation, this time in the form of Flamengo midfielder Reinier – after the club held talks with the players representatives.

The 17-year-old has impressed with Rubro-Negro, scoring six goals and registering two assists this season, although the youngster was ultimately unable to feature for Flamengo in their FIFA Club World Cup defeat to Liverpool.

Reinier, who turns 18 on January 19, would become the fifth Brazilian currently playing at Santiago Bernabéu, with Rodrygo, Vinicius Jr, Marcelo and Casemiro already present.

Moreover, according to Brazilian outlet Globoesporte, Los Blancos are lining up a €30m bid for Reinier in the January transfer window with a view of signing the teenager after he turns 18, in order to comply with FIFA’s rules regarding the signing of minors.

Reinier would initially join up with Real Madrid’s Castilla side under the guidance of club legend Raul for the remainder of the 2019/20 season.

The player had previously held talks with fellow La Liga side Atlético Madrid, who subsequently failed with their approach after being put off by the €60m price-tag. In November 2019, Reinier did, however, sign a contract extension until 31 October 2024 with a release clause of €35m being inserted.

Although the club is not overly enthused about selling on of their top prospects, Flamengo will need to raise around €72m from player sales in order to keep to their 2020 budget, and have therefore come to terms with the imminent departure of Reinier.

The only potential stumbling block is that Reinier is set to take part in Brazil’s U-23 Olympic qualifiers throughout January, which may prove difficult for negotiations between the two clubs with the final taking place on 9 February.

Jorge Jesus, Flamengo’s head coach, has recently admitted that his player “is going to be sold to one of Europe’s big clubs for a multi-million-euro fee”, as a deal seemingly edging closer and closer.
