Reports across the English media this afternoon have provided updates on the respective interest of Chelsea and Manchester United in the signature of Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho.
Sancho’s meteoric rise
19-year-old winger Sancho proved one of the talking points of European football last season.
The English youngster, who made the move to Borussia Dortmund from Man City in the summer of 2017 for £8 million, built on the potential that he showcased at the Westfalenstadion in 2017/18 with a string of sensational displays over the course of the campaign.
The pace, trickery, eye for goal and creative flair possessed by Sancho have seen him rise from exciting but raw prospect to one of world football’s most highly-regarded starlets.
In total, last season, the blistering wide-man racked up 13 goals and a hefty 19 assists across all competitions.
The early months of the new campaign, meanwhile, have seen Sancho’s production reach even more impressive heights.
Despite it only being December, the 11-time capped English international has already notched 12 goals, to go along with 13 assists.
As such, Sancho’s stellar form in Germany has inevitably seen the teen linked with a potential return to the Premier League.
And, as outlined above, updates on the respective interest of the Red Devils and Blues has emerged online today.
First off, the Times suggest that Erling Haaland’s decision to join Dortmund is likely to see Man United step up their interest in Sancho.
The Red Devils are thought to be on the lookout for a marquee attacking signing, with their failure to land Haaland set to result in those in charge at Old Trafford ramping up their pursuit of the Norwegian’s new teammate.
In addition, significantly, it is added that BVB have opened to the idea of allowing Sancho to move on next summer, with the teen himself keen on a return to England.
The Telegraph, meanwhile, have also provided an insight into the race for Sancho’s services.
James Ducker backs the claim that Manchester United maintain a ‘long-standing interest’ in the wide-man.
However, it is added that Chelsea, and not the Red Devils, are viewed as the front-runners at present.
Frank Lampard is said to be ‘eager’ to make Sancho his first big-name signing at Stamford Bridge, with ‘the prospect of a return to London also thought to appeal to the player.’
