Zinedine Zidane Insists Real Madrid Won’t Judge 2020 Based on Silverware

2 min read

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has played down any expectation for the club to be winning trophies this calendar year, stressing that they won’t judge the next 12 months solely off any silverware that they’ve won.

Los Blancos couldn’t challenge in the Champions League or La Liga last season, while they also missed out on the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de España.

Expectations are high for Real Madrid to get their hands on more trophies this time around, but Zidane has stressed that he’s not going to judge his side’s season based off the number of titles that they win in 2020.

Failure is not trying, not giving our all, that would be a failure,” Zidane said, quoted by Marca“What’s important is giving our all on the pitch and then we’ll see.

“One team will win the league and another the Champions League, and the rest are stupid? I don’t think so.

We know how difficult the Champions League is because of the rivals that are there, but in the league, there are many games so I consider it to be very complicated to achieve.”

Real Madrid are already two points behind Barcelona in the race to win La Liga this season, having failed to pick up a win in the league since the start of December.

Los Blancos haven’t won La Liga since the 2016/17 season.

As far as their chances in the Champions League go, Real Madrid will have to find a way past Premier League champions Manchester City if they want any chance of adding a 14th European title to their collection.

The club had won three consecutive Champions League winner’s medals between 2016 and 2018, but last year Real Madrid were knocked out of the competition by Dutch giants Ajax.
